Were only four months into the year, but Star Trek The Video Game is already aiming for worst game of 2013. It has some production values and I give it credit for not directly following a film, but it falls completely on its ass in every category. Generic shooting, incredibly poor artificial intelligence and glitchy bug-ridden gameplay amounts to nothing more than a meager attempt to cash in on next months film.

VideoGamer: "Star Trek is an inspirational game. Not in a good way, of course. But it is so immensely tiresome, so poor and such a cash-in that it has inspired me to change the way I review games, for one night only, and take the same approach to reviewing the game that it does to your time: put loads of bad things in linear succession."

The Globe and Mail: "I tried to like the game, both because Im something of a fan of the series and out of patriotism for London, Ont.-based developer Digital Extremes. Its evident that some serious effort went into parts of Star Trek, but some of the key elements like how the game looks and plays got short shrift. At best its a mess that looks and feels dated, and at worst it is frustrating and unplayable."

Essentially, this game is an on-rails arcade shooter with supplementary mini-games. One player is whack-a-moling down the bad guys while the other completes a variety of puzzles. Its a clear attempt to combine the intellectual prowess lauded by Star Treks TV franchises with the cowboys-and-indians action adventures of the movies. Our PR representative acknowledged that Star Trek has never been about just shooting the bad guys, and indeed this game does compel the players to do other things besides butt-kicking for justice. But I felt like Paramount werent brave enough to give players genuine choice about whether to fight with brains or brawn.
